TCPLA welcomes the Green Energy Act

Tuesday, May 19th 2009 9:51:55am

The Toronto Centre Provincial Liberal Association (TCPLA) is pleased to announce that on Thursday, May 14th 2009, the Ontario Green Energy Act (GEA) was passed into law by the Ontario legislature..

The Green Energy Act is a bold series of co-ordinated actions motivated by government’s desire to create substantial employment in a green economy and reduce Ontario’s impact on the climate.  In addition to helping the province to eliminate dirty coal power by 2014, the Act positions Ontario as a leader in renewable energy and energy conservation.

The GEA was first tabled on February 23rd, 2009 by the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George Smitherman, on behalf of the McGuinty government.  After months of public consultations across the province, the act was finally passed into law by the Ontario legislature on a vote of 59 to 13, with opposition from Progressive Conservative members.

Quick facts about the Green Energy Act that you should know:
• It is projected to create 50,000 “green” jobs in its first three years.
• It includes North America’s first ever Feed-In-Tariff.
• It supports the establishment of a culture of conservation in Ontario.
• It supports investment to help create a 21st century Smart energy system.
